With the onset of the State Standards it is mandatory to teach three main types of writing: narrative, opinion and informational. The curriculum is to be taught so that mastery occurs at each grade level. Writing needs to build upon the previous year’s instruction if we are to rise to the high level of demand. The Gradual Release of Responsibility Model (Pearson & Gallagher, 1983) will be vital to the success of students. Students can no longer have a different daily ten to fifteen minute mini-lesson presented to them and be expected to understand, own and apply it to their own writing. The number of focus lessons on particular skills or strategies is dependent upon the complexity of what is being presented. It is in this way that Writing Workshop can have proven results. In like manner, Reading Comprehension needs to be taught explicitly using nonfiction and fiction texts. Multiple demonstrations (think aloud) need to be used with complex grade level text.
